The perks of becoming a doctor : what it is like to save people’s life

Perhaps, no other professional in the world gets as much respect as a doctor. Doctor is a word, when heard by anyone can immediately develop respect in the heart. It is the noblest profession in all the professions available throughout the world. Being a doctor is having the responsibilities more, than the privilege. Doctor is considered as a highly responsible person because he can save a life of human being, when the patient is in critical condition.

The core function of a doctor seems to be quite simple – that of treating and healing people suffering from diseases or injuries. As a doctor you’ll examine the patients, ascertain the cause of the disease or injury, prescribe medical tests if needed, interpret the results of medical tests, diagnose either on the basis of the medical tests and experience, prescribe medicines and administer treatment. Apart from treating and healing diseases and injuries, you’ll also advice patients on preventive measures.

Doctors perform their functions in conjunction with other health care professionals like nurses, medical technologists and others. But the final responsibility lies with the doctor. So, the profession is of precision.

The margin of error is zero, or has to be minimal. As a doctor, you should understand that. There are no second chances and no trial and error .A single wrong treatment can further aggravate the problem or even result in death.

The characteristics that a doctor should have are as follows. The most important characteristic is that doctor should have good memory as well as he should be able to recollect the information, whenever required. He should be regular in his studies; this is because there are always new researches done for some or the other diseases. Those updates are provided through websites as well as through journals. The understanding power should be more; he should able to understand the things and grasp them at a quicker rate.

US follow a a refined  curriculum for obtaining a medical degree and license to practice. Unlike many other countries, US has a Pre-Med (four years of Undergraduate programme), MD programme (Four years) and USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1, 2 & 3) after completing all; a student is conferred with a license to practice medicine in the US.

Admission requirements to MD programme include an undergraduate degree or four years of study, preferably from a US accredited institution.

Thus for an international student it is mandatory, to put atleast four years of study after 10+2, to appear for MD programme in the US. A Pre-Med programme does not entitle you to become a doctor or guarantee admission to medical school. It just gives a bachelor’s degree in health sciences but it is a prerequisite for MD programme.

Qualities of Medical Students : US Medical Schools Admission criteria

Defining what constitutes a “good doctor” can be subjective. But medical organizations have become more aware of the importance of personal qualities, and not just grades, in assessing an applicant’s potential.

Those of you who despair that medical school admissions is too heavily driven by “numbers” may welcome the American Medical Association’s work towards identifying personal qualities necessary for medical school and practice while finding ways to recognize them in the admissions process.  In recent times medical school interviews also reflects this trend that drive to find out more about the person behind the application.

In 2009, the American Medical Association (AMA) conducted a survey of 131 U.S. medical schools , which found the following:

• Sixty-five percent of medical schools named at least one personal quality desired of applicants, including motivation, maturity, compassion, leadership, and integrity.

• A majority of schools (60 percent) used the personal statement to evaluate whether applicants possessed these qualities.

• Of those that assessed behavioral competencies, only 35 percent of medical schools relied solely on the interview to conduct an assessment.

Given this , we recommend students to consider the following while making application to a medical school in the US.

• Write a strong personal statement: Many applicants fall into a trap of thinking this is an afterthought; however, the personal statement is much more important in the admissions process. Personal statements that are creative or show candor are more memorable to busy admissions committee members.

• Letters of recommendations: Encourage those writing a letter of recommendation on your behalf to not only discuss your strengths as a student or relevant experience and accomplishments, but to also mention what personal qualities you possess that they believe will make you a good doctor.

There is momentum toward incorporating (and evaluating) more personal factors than in the past. Depending on your situation, the admissions scales could tip either way. Staying on top of trends in medical school admissions is important in helping you prepare for this difficult process.

Study Medicine in US : preliminary planning and know how

Studying medicine in the U.S.A. generally begins after completion of four years of undergraduate study which includes meeting the pre-medical school course requirements along with obtaining a bachelor’s (B.A.) degree in any subject. The requirements (prerequisites)  to study medicine in UASA vary from school to school, but almost always include biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry as main science courses.  Some schools may also require that you have taken other humanities, English, math, and science classes as well, so make sure you look into medical schools while you are still an undergraduate so you can choose your classes appropriately.

University medical study in USA is a 4 year course divided into two roughly equal components: pre-clinical (consisting of didactic courses in the basic sciences) and clinical (clerkships consisting of rotations through different wards of a teaching hospital). This program leads to Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) or Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) depending on the medical school; both degrees allow the holder to practice medicine after completing an accredited residency program. The main prerequisite is to have a bachelor degree in biology, chemistry or other field relevant to medicine

A few medical schools provide limited programs beginning after high school that combine undergraduate college study with medical education. Students are admitted provisionally to these programs based upon their high school credentials and, if their performance is satisfactory, are permitted to progress to the M.D. degree. This program generally takes six or seven years and admission to it is extremely competitive for foreign students.

Medical student candidate will also need to have completed the MCAT test, which stands for Medical College Admissions Test. The test will determine the ability to think critically, problem solve, write clearly, as well as measure the student’s knowledge of various scientific concepts. A good score on the MCAT is key to getting into a good medical school.
There are very few opportunities for foreign students to obtain the Doctor of Medicine degree in the United States. American medical schools receive twice as many applications from qualified U.S. citizens as can be accommodated and many of the publicly-supported medical schools are required by law to admit only state residents.
International student applying to medical universities in USA must bear in mind that he will, unfortunately, be at a disadvantage to local students because publicly funded colleges are required to put part or all of their state funds towards students who are residents of the school’s state. This is mainly to ensure that there are enough doctors for the area, but it can put international students at a huge disadvantage in the selection process. You can always apply to private universities, but, of course, these will be more expensive. Each student will need to weigh the pros and cons of each choice that is available, and apply to the school that is right for him or her.
Most institutions require foreign students to have completed at least the last two years of their undergraduate study in U.S.A. Universities. An increasing number of medical schools require a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. school and more of that, the most important thing to know is that there are very low acceptance rates for international students.
