Things you should know about Family Medicine

The specialty of family medicine is centered on lasting, caring relationships with patients and their families.

The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, sexes, each organ system and every disease entity.Family physicians integrate the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences to provide continuing and comprehensive health care. Family medicine is a discipline only recognised by this name in the USA, Canada and India. In other parts of the world and especially in Europe, it is known as general practice.

Medical students have to specialise when they have qualified and some don’t feel that they want to tie themselves down, perhaps for the rest of their careers, to the study and care of one element of the population – geriatrics, paediatrics, obstetrics etc – or one part of the body – urology, gynaecology, orthopaedics and the rest. They feel that a holistic approach to wellbeing and ill health will result in more personal satisfaction and as an end result a healthier population. Many family medicine practitioners have a particular interest in sports medicine and dietetics, as a means of keeping their patients well.
Family medicine practitioners are occasionally looked down upon by people who feel that a lack of specialization is in fact a sign that this field is somehow not as good as the more established specialties. This is obviously not so; the family medicine practitioner needs to have a great deal of experience across the board, to recognize a huge number of conditions and to weigh up whether they need instant intervention or whether a more conservative wait and see policy to be put in place. Most doctors who have followed a narrow specialism only see a patient when a family medicine practitioner has seen them first and identified a disease process which warrants the input of a more specialised kind.

In small communities the family medicine practitioner can be a vital tool in maintaining the health of that community. He or she will get to know their patients very well and will also know the family histories. This can be an essential diagnostic tool, as often the family holds the key to working out what the matter is; in time, the family practitioner will most likely have known a large percentage of the population since birth. The idea of a local doctor who knows everyone can be something of a cliché to some people, but it really does have a beneficial effect. People are more likely to approach someone they know well and who they know is also trusted by their friends and family.

Deciding on to study Medicine

You would like to join the medical profession but you doubt  whether or not it is right for you? Medical schools expect certain skills from aspiring medical students, they include, but not limited to :

  • .You must also possess the capacity to learn and to retain large amounts of information
  • You will need good analytic and reasoning skills.
  • Much of the work is patient-focused and involves teamwork with other healthcare professionals. Therefore you are required to have good people skills .
  • Medical practice requires lifelong learning and the work can be challenging. Therefore you must be highly motivated by a strong interest in medicine.
  • Other skills required are time-management, leadership and an inquiring and critical mind. (these are skills that you will learn as you progress through medical school)

Also before planning to join a medical school what is recommend  is following a doctor around in a healthcare setting for a couple of days or even more. This process is called us doctor shadowing.

Find a doctor to shadow

Talking to your own physician can be a good start. If they are unwilling or for whatever reason, unable to have you shadow them, they may be able to get you in touch with other physicians, or the volunteer liaison at the local hospital. You should also speak with your guidance counselor/career office to see what they have on file.

Most students complete some sort of internship in order to graduate, but that internship may not have answered their questions about the medical field in general and being a doctor in particular.

Taking a year off, commonly known as the “gap” year, is becoming popular for many reasons, one of which is being able to find a program that can help you decide your future.

There are also several internships and volunteer opportunities abroad in developing countries. The experience that you will get at these placements is invaluable. Doing a placement in a developing country can be a real eye opener and can be hugely instrumental in helping you make up your mind about whether or not becoming a doctor is right for you. Here you will see medicine being practiced like you’ve never seen it before with sparsely equipped hospitals and overworked doctors overcoming all odds to dispense medical care to seriously ill patients. After a stint at any one of these placements you will know for sure whether this is the right calling for you and whether becoming a doctor is ultimately right for you.

The Changes in MCAT Exam 2015 : Things to know

The MCAT exam or the Medical College Admission Test has been a part of the medical school admissions process for over 80 years. Almost all medical schools in the US will want to see your MCAT scores when you apply for admission. Several graduate programs and health professions also recognize and accept MCAT scores in place of other tests.

The MCAT exam aims to assess you on certain knowledge and skills that expert medical educators have identified as fundamental for succeeding in medical school and practicing medicine.

This standardized multiple-choice test is divided into three sections – Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Verbal Reasoning.

How to Take MCAT

While the MCAT exam is a crucial part of the application process, it is still only a part of the application process. Your MCAT scores by themselves will not affect your chances of getting admission into the medical school in question. Admissions committees take several factors into consideration before accepting or rejecting an application. Your exposure to health care and medical research environments, academic strengths, personal interests and experiences, and what you would potentially contribute to the campus and community are all taken into account.

If you are unhappy with your score, you can decide to re-take the exam if you want to.You can take the MCAT exam up to three times a year.

Changes In The MCAT Exam- MCAT 2015

There are a few changes being proposed in the MCAT exam and these will come into effect in the spring of 2015.

Changes in MCAT Exam : The New MCAT Has More Tested Topics:

There will be three additional semesters’ worth of material in college-level biochemistry, introductory psychology and introductory sociology, increasing the number of prerequisite classes from eight to eleven. Passages will also place more emphasis on integrating topics, with general chemistry, physics, and biochemistry (for instance) all appearing within the same passage! Here’s the new MCAT at a glance:

Changes in MCAT Exam : The New MCAT Is Almost Double The Length:

On the new MCAT, you’ll face 230 questions over 6 hours and 15 minutes versus 144 questions in 3 hours 20 minutes currently. The new test will require a lot more stamina and focus. The breakdown of these questions is 10 passages with 4 to 7 questions each and 15 stand-alone questions in each of the science sections, and 9 passages in the CARS section. (Information from AAMC Quarterly Update Meeting, May 2014)

Changes in MCAT Exam : The New MCAT Will Have a Different Scoring Scale:

Each of the four sections on MCAT 2015 will be scored 118-132, for a total possible score of 528. The mean is expected to be 125 per section for a total mean score of 500. This differs from the current 1-15 per section and 1-45 total scale. The first administration of the new MCAT will be in April 2015.

Changes in MCAT Exam : You’ll Face New Question Types & Skills:

The current MCAT focuses on content knowledge and critical thinking, but the new MCAT tests two additional skills. Research Design focuses on the fundamentals of creating research projects, bias, faulty results, and variable relationships. Graphical Analysis & Data Interpretation focuses on deriving conclusions and drawing inferences from visual data, including figures, graphs and data tables.

Changes in MCAT Exam : The New MCAT Has A More Medical Approach:

On the new MCAT, passages will be restructured to test all of the natural sciences within biological systems, often invoking physiology or pathology. Showing the application of all the tested sciences to medicine encourages students to view these subjects not simply as prerequisites for med school, but for the practice of medicine in general.

Changes in MCAT Exam : Verbal Reasoning Is Changing Slightly:

The new section will now be called Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, or CARS. Unlike the current Verbal Reasoning section, the new CARS section will no longer include passages on the natural sciences; instead, it will focus exclusively on humanities and social sciences passages. This section will now have 53 items, which will need to be completed in 90 minutes. The passages will have 500 – 600 words.
