Which are medical specialties in demand

How do you know what specialty is right for you? Most medical students decide during their 3rd and 4th year clinical rotations which specialty training to pursue. Students have to start applying to residency programs early 4th year and go on interviews during 4th year.

your personality may be suited for certain specialties more than others. If you are someone who enjoys being part of a fast-paced environment and caring for patients with critical conditions, working as a trauma doctor may be a good fit.

In addition to personality and interests, you may also want to consider what specialties are in demand. Entering a specialty in which there is a demand may make obtaining a residency easier. It may also mean more employment opportunities when you complete your training.

Entering a specialty in which there is a demand may make obtaining a residency easier. It may also mean more employment opportunities when you complete your training. Depending on the specialty and where you practice, you may also be able to obtain loan forgiveness. Below are a few specialties that are in short supply.

Although it is difficult to state the exact cause of a shortage of physicians, it could be a combination of different factors. In general, the aging population has created more of a demand for medical care. Changing healthcare laws have also affected the need for medical services.

Below are a few specialties that are in short supply.

Family Practice

Family practice doctors, also called primary care doctors, are in demand all over the United States. Family practice physicians care for patients of all ages. A primary care doctor often coordinates the patient’s medical care. They may treat people with all types of conditions from minor problems, such as the flu to serious conditions, such as heart disease. According to research by the Annals of Family Medicine, it is predicted that there will be a shortage of over 50,000 family medicine doctors by the year 2025.

Oncology

Although primary care is often mentioned, it is not the only specialty where there is a shortage. Experts predict there will also be a shortage of oncologists, which will develop in the coming years. Medical oncologists care for people who have cancer. Some oncologists specialize in treating a certain type of cancer while others treat a variety of cancers. The shortage is expected to be primary for general oncologists.

Ophthalmology

Ophthalmologists care for people who have a variety of conditions that affect the eyes. For example, they may diagnose and treat people with conditions, such as glaucoma and detached retinas. Statistics from the Federal Heath Resources and Service Administration indicate that fewer doctors are choosing ophthalmology as their specialty, and a demand is growing.

General Surgery

As many doctors choose to narrow their focus down, a shortage of general surgeons is developing throughout the United States. Researchers predict that the number of general surgeon in practice will fall from about 40,000 to about 30,000 by 2020. General surgeons perform all type of operations usually involving the abdominal organs. Some general surgeons also treat people with diseases of the skin and thyroid gland.

Scope of becoming a Palliative Care Doctor

Doctors cure diseases and save lives—but there is more to being a doctor than fixing an injury or curing a condition. But some doctors  are  more equipped to reduce suffering and ease pain of their patients. This specialization called as palliative care

Palliative care specialists focus on providing care and treatments which improve quality of life for people in any stage of their illness, whether it is life threatening, terminal or curable. Palliative care aims to provide a holistic approach to give you the best quality of life possible.

Job of a Palliative Care Doctor

Palliative care doctors work closely with other physicians to treat uncomfortable symptoms, such as pain, nausea and fatigue. Treatment may involve prescribing medication, radiation therapy or other procedures to alleviate symptoms and improve functioning. Palliative care is often recommended for hospice patients and those whose disease is considered incurable. That being said, palliative care is also for people who are actively receiving curative treatment and are expected to recover.

Doctors who specialize in palliative care may educate patients and family members on ways to improve the patient’s well being through diet, exercise, medication and relaxation techniques. Palliative care doctors may also provide information on advanced directives and help patients make difficult medical decisions.

In order to provide comprehensive palliative care, various members of the interdisciplinary team, such as nurses, social workers, counselors and nutritionists are involved in a patient’s care. The palliative care doctor leads the team and makes sure everyone is on the same page.

How to Become a Palliative Doctor

Palliative care was recognized as a sub specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties in 2006 and board certification is available in hospice and palliative care medicine.

After graduating from college with a four year degree and completing medical school, doctors interested in palliative care must complete a residency in one of ten specialties. The specialties include family practice, physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery and psychiatry.

After residency, a minimum of a one year palliative care fellowship must be completed. Upon completion of a palliative care fellowship, doctors can take an exam to become board certified in hospice and palliative care.

Palliative care doctors work in hospitals of all sizes, rehabilitation facilities, sub-acute hospitals, nursing homes and hospice facilities. They may also work in private practice and outpatient clinics.

Scope of Palliative Care Doctors

Advances in medicine have allowed people to live longer and survive conditions that were once fatal, but increased survival does not always mean being pain or symptom free. Increased importance has also been placed on improving a patient’s quality of life—not just curing his or her condition—which also creates a need for palliative care doctors.

For many doctors, their goal is to fix someone, cure their disease or save their life. As a palliative care specialist, your focus is not just on your patient’s survival, but on his or her quality of life and overall well-being.

Career Options as General Surgeons and Specialized Surgeons

Surgery is one of the most demanding and interesting medical specialties. Although it can be a challenge, many physicians enjoy the excitement of doing surgery. Before you make your decision, you may want to consider how much time you are willing to spend in residency, where you want to work and what interests you the most.

General Surgeons

General surgeons are trained to treat a wide variety of conditions, which may require surgical interventions. In many cases, surgeons perform routine types of procedures, such as removal of the gallbladder and appendectomies. But there are other instances, where general surgeons perform more complex surgeries involving the endocrine, digestive and vascular systems.

After graduating from medical school, doctors interested in becoming a general surgeon need to complete a five-year general surgery residency. During their residency, doctors must complete a minimum of 750 operative procedures. An additional 25 surgical procedures in critical care surgery must also be completed. During training, general surgeons will perform surgery in areas such as emergency surgery, pediatrics and trauma surgery. After meeting all requirements, doctors are eligible to take the exam to become board certified in general surgery.

Specialized Surgeons

There are many different types of surgical specialties for doctors who are interested in narrowing their focus. For example, cardiovascular surgeons operate on the heart and blood vessels of the cardiac system. Pediatric surgeons are trained to perform surgery on children.

Some additional types of surgical specialties include trauma, which involves performing surgery on patients who have acute injuries as the result of traumas, such as a car accident or gunshot. Surgical specialties also exist in areas including reconstructive surgery, neurosurgery, transplants and orthopedics.

Surgeons who wish to specialize may take different routes. One option is to complete a general surgery residency followed by a fellowship in a specific type of surgery. Another option is to obtain a residency in the particular specialty of interest, which will include a year or more of general surgery in addition to the specialty. The length of a residency or fellowship for surgical specialties varies depending on the area of focus.

General Surgeons VS   Specialized Surgeons

There are several similarities between becoming a general surgeon and a specialist. For instance, both types of surgeons are trained to diagnose and treat conditions that require surgery. Whether you work as a general surgeon or specialize, you most likely will be working long hours. All types of surgical residencies can be demanding and require residents to complete a certain number of procedures. Salaries for both general surgeons and specialists vary based on the number of surgeries performed and geographic locations.

Just as there are some similarities between general surgeons and specialists, there are also some important differences. Surgeons who decide to specialize will usually be required to complete longer training than general surgeons.

In addition, one main difference is that general surgeons usually perform a wider variety of surgeries, which some doctors may enjoy. On the flip side, specialists have a narrower focus, but can become experts in a particular type of surgery.
